The Lion Man 32,000 BC

This truly wonderful artifact has been dated to around 32,000 BC and demonstrates that prehistoric man was more akin to contemporary man than we care to admit. People talk about mankind's "spiritual evolution" as if it is an accepted fact. This little statue shows that our "primitive" ancestors were thinking, feeling and creative people. Spiritually we are probably no better than man 30,000 years ago!

So why do I feel compelled to mention this in my blog? Just think about it. This is really pushing out the boundaries. The story of modern man is pretty much defined by the period 3000 BC to 2010 AD. Suggestions of Atlantean-period civilisations are ridiculed because around 10,000 BC man was supposed to be some sort of half-animal hunter-gatherer. Some religious fundamentalist still insist the world was created only 5,000 years ago.

The Lion Man statue is carved in mammoth tusk and is about 296 mm (11.7 inches) high. Amazingly, when the statue was found in 1939, it was in 100's of pieces. It was assembled bit-by-bit over a period of 50 years with some additional bits found as late as 1997/8. If you are interested, have a look at Wikipedia.

Recently, in the same region, more bone figures and flutes have been found. These have been dated to around 37,000 BC. Read more at Times Online. It seems we still have a lot to learn about the history of Homo sapiens.
