The Pope Has No Clothes

In the well-known fairytale all the Emperor's subjects know the Emperor has no clothes, but they won't admit it. It takes an innocent child to help people see things as they really are. The Emperor's finery turns out to be imaginary and he is actually naked.

In the same way the Pope's power is given to him by the people, the worldwide congregation of the Catholic Church. The Pope is the creation of the Catholic Church. Underneath his pomp and ceremony he is just a public servant doing what you would expect, protecting and promoting the system.

The problem of child abuse in the Catholic Church (and other churches!) is like a sickness that has spread throughout the community. It is the people who must take action to ensure that the system is changed. Recent events reveal just the tip of the iceberg. The Pope and his Cardinals will do nothing:-

...one of Benedict's top aides, Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, called the sex scandal accusations "a pretext for attacking the church"... - ABC News, New York, USA.

...cover-up claims hit Pope Benedict XVI late Wednesday in the case of a US priest who allegedly molested up to 200 deaf boys... - The Age, Melbourne, Australia.

...for every 10 people you hear saying they were abused, you can be sure there are another ten thousand victims staying silent... - BBC News, London, UK.

...the pontiff had engaged in "extraordinary verbal gymnastics...to defend himself and the Vatican from the charge that they instructed bishops worldwide to conceal child sex crimes"...the "most glaring omission" in the pastoral letter was his "failure to address new revelations that he himself failed as a manager of abusive clerics. He pointedly does not include himself in his criticism of church leaders"... - CNN International, Atlanta, USA.
