The Vanished Aether

Once upon a time, scientists believed radio signals and light beams were transmitted as waves through the hypothetical aether. That's a bit like sound waves travelling in air. The aether was thought to be an intangible and invisible medium that permeated the entire universe. It was only in the early 1900's that this notion was finally abandoned, but possibly it deserved to be given some more thought.
