Eyes 500 Million Years Old

Eyes that are 500 million years old have been discovered on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. According to an article by Bridie Smith in The Age on 30 June 2011, the fossils are "...the earliest evidence of compound eyes, which, like those of a fly, are made up of...thousands of separate lenses." Find more about this on the Australian Geographic website. The discovery suggests that complex vision evolved tens of millions of years earlier than originally thought.
