4-Dimensional Mathematics

In 1843 mathematician William Hamilton realised that to describe the rotation, shrinking and stretching of an object in 3-dimensional space a 4th number is needed. He invented quaternions, in effect, the mathematics of 4-dimensional space. But there is nothing in his discovery to suggest that "time" is this 4th dimension (although Hamilton did think of time as a dimension).
