Minkowski & Spacetime

In 1908 Hermann Minkowski proposed a 4-dimensional "spacetime" interpretation of Einstein's theory, with 3 dimensions of space plus time, the 4th dimension. Einstein didn't like Minkowski's geometric interpretation. I doubt Einstein actually believed time to be a 4th dimension. It might have been expedient for him to look the other way, if that's what it took to gain acceptance of his theory.
