Aren't We All Mutants?

Pauwels & Bergier speculate that Homo sapiens might be changing into Homo superior, and that this new race of men may already exist, "mutants" living secretly among us. But aren't we are all "mutants", variations on a theme? I think Pauwels & Bergier make the same mistake that so many others do, believing that the human race is moving forward inevitably and unerringly, according to some grand and mystical blueprint of gods or aliens.
