The Conscious Universe

Some people believe that consciousness existed in some form before the universe was created. They think the world we see around us is merely an illusion created by the mind and that consciousness permeates the universe like some sort of energy or vibration. Why would anyone believe this nonsense? Where do these ideas come from?
