The Need to Believe

Human consciousness is a function of the human brain. Consciousness ceases to exist without the brain. What could be simpler than that? Why even postulate a "soul" or "spirit" that can exist without the human body? To paraphrase the famous French mathematician and astronomer Pierre-Simon Laplace, we have no need of that hypothesis. But it seems that some people do have a need to believe.
